Professional Development

  • Continuous Education: Subscriptions to ACI Learning, Udemy, edX, Audiobooks & Youtube videos on a variety of topics
  • Industry-relevant podcasts, and newsletters.
  • Community Involvement: Active participation in Security, Network, Systems Engineering & Business Process discussion groups.
  • Personal Development Lab: Design, Implementation and Maintenance of my development lab. Consists of a Colocation site running a VMware virtualization cluster with iSCSI storage array. SDWAN internet connection at both the Colocation and Lab site. As well as SDWAN mesh VPN tunnels connecting the Colo to the Lab site. Lab site consist of ProxMox virtualization platform and a ProxMox Backup Server. Lab also has network attached storage for various projects. Lab also consist of automation systems such as Ansible to maintain all of the systems. Newest addition is a 3 node ProxMox cluster with Ceph storage for testing High Availability virtualization as a replacement for VMware DRS/VSAN.
  • Life Long Learner: I am a big advocate of life long learning. It doesn’t matter what it is, you should learn something new continuously. Things change so fast with technology, what we were masters of 5 years ago is almost always replaced by something new we must master yet again. It keeps life interesting at least.

Soft Skills

  • Problem Solving: Strong ability to identify issues and develop effective solutions. I enjoy getting to know all of the process and parts of a system. This makes identifying abnormalities much faster when thing go wrong. This also allows inefficiencies to be highlighted and corrected in a much more structured way.
  • Communication: Excellent at explaining complex systems in a way that clients can understand and see the benefits for their business processes. It show mastery if you are able to take a complex process or technology and make it relatable for anyone. This also allows them to see how technology can enable their department/business unit to be more efficient or take advantage of a market for better returns
  • Teamwork: Highly skilled at working in teams, ensuring effective collaboration and successful project completion, whether in a leadership role or as a team member. I always seek to improve my teammates ability to understand a process or business case. I like to do this most through procedures in our management system so the work gets done in a predictable and timely manner thus reducing the friction in a team when someone might have a different way of doing things. I always encourage teammates to review the procedure and look for ways to improve it. I know a lot about a lot but I definitely do not know everything.
